This close up of the deep base relief of the Column of Marcus Aurelius shows the upward spiralling effect of this frieze as it tells the story of the Emperor's victories over Marcomanni and Quadi in Czechia, and the Sarmatians in Hungary, ending in A.D. 175. The wonderful story-telling imagination of these ancient people has unraveled a cinematographic memorial appearing like an immense strip of film, wrapped around the column, from the bottom to the top. |
